Sarcophagus

Paris, France - 24 Jun 2019      See on Google Maps

On at trip to the 75th Anniversary of the landings on D-Day we also visited Paris. We visited the Hotel National des Invalides and the Army Museum housed there. In the Veteran's Chapel are the tombs of France's military heros. This is the sarcophagus of Napoleon. The body of Napoleon rests in five successive coffins, which were made of tin, mahogany, lead, lead again and ebony, and these are held within the sarcophagus positioned in the middle of the crypt.

This was a tricky photograph as no flash was allowed in the crypt. To hold the shutter open long enough I set the camera on a rail to held on to it to get the right angle. The other challenge were the tourists - I had to wait until there were no humans interrupting the composition.
