Sun Crest

Kahului, HI - 02 Jan 2023      See on Google Maps

On a cruise in Hawaii we visited Kahului, Maui. An early day up at 2:30 am to prepare for a ride to the top (10,000 feet) of Haleakala Peak to watch the sunrise over the volcano crater. It was very cold on top of the mountain - very cold. Fortunately I had read about the chill and was prepared but there were others on the excursion in shorts - it was below 40 degrees and very windy.

We arrived well before the sun was up - and to be "up" it will have to crest the clouds as the summit was higher than the cloud cover. When we arrived there were no other people so I was able to set up with my tripod with my camera and a 24-105mm lens. By the time this picture was taken the hillside was crowded with tourists - packed.

Since I had a tripod a long exposure was possible with a low ISO. I shot at f22 to create the starburst of the rising sun.
